This week we draw our interest to the use of antiques as props. But what exactly are props?A prop is anything placed in a set to achieve a desired effect or atmosphere for a scene. Props can be used by a character or simply be displayed in the backdrop. Often unnoticed by the audience, props play a significant role in creating a visually rich and historically accurate world for television shows, films, theatre productions, advertisements and even private events.

One of our favorite use of props recently is in the 2013 film “The Great Gatsby,” set in the “Roaries Twenties” in 1920’s America, a time of prosperity and celebration of the end of World War I. Art Deco style peaked during this time, characterized by rich colors, bold geometric shapes and lavish ornamentation. Large ostrich feathers, fine cut crystal stemware, antique whisky decanters, and bronze and gilded accessories are just a few of the period-specific props that recreated the era, providing a feast for the audience’s eyes. As seen above, an Art Deco inspired wedding reception cleverly uses similar props for the dining table setting. Below are more illustrations of how antiques can be used props in advertising to create a mood and tell a story.
